Its goals are to prepare the future generation of users of large-scale facilities for synchrotron and neutron scattering; develop and strengthen sustainable scientific exchanges between the French and Swedish communities on the use of large-scale facilities, in connection with the forthcoming ESS commissioning; and strengthen the links between institutes in France (ILL, ESRF, SOLEIL) and in Sweden (MAX-IV, ESS).

PAERI’26: Navigating Science Communication in a Shifting Landscape

We welcome you to the sixth international Public Awareness and Engagement with Research Infrastructures conference, PAERI’26. The event will be hosted by European XFEL in the Hamburg region, Germany. The theme of the conference is Navigating Science Communication in a Shifting Landscape.

Registration and abstract submission will start in autumn 2025. The conference will take place 18-20 March 2026.

The PAERI’26 venue is on the campus of European XFEL, which is the world’s largest X-ray laser. The 3.4 km long facility generates extremely intense X-ray flashes used by researchers from all over the world to map atomic details of viruses, film chemical reactions, and study processes like those in the interior of planets.

Welcome to the HZB Photon School 2026 to be held in a hybrid format at the BESSY II Synchrotron Light Source at the Wilhelm-Conrad-Röntgen-Campus, Berlin-Adlershof. 
Lectures will take place online and on-site from 23 to 27 March 2026, while the practical training sessions will be conducted on-site only from 30 March to 2 April 2026 (*). 

(*) subject to BESSY II being operated at a level that allows access of external users.

About the School and Participation

The school is primarily aimed at master´s students and early-career researchers in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, life, or environmental sciences. Participants will be introduced to synchrotron and laboratory-based characterisation methods that probe the molecular structure, function, and dynamics of complex material systems.

The programme consists of basic and specialised lectures given in the first week by experienced teachers who are HZB scientists or BESSY II super-users from our partner universities and research centres. The second week is dedicated to hands-on training at several BESSY II experimental stations and X-ray laboratories. Participants will get a vivid experience by joining an experiment to working in small groups.

The programme will be held in English.

Take your skills to the next level by joining this advanced course focused on developing Python scripts and plugins in Avizo.
You’ll work on real case studies and learn how to:

  • Automate workflows across multiple images
  • Convert Avizo objects into NumPy arrays (and vice versa)
  • Extend Avizo’s capabilities using powerful Python tools such as SimpleITK
  • Develop your own custom plugin

The training is divided into two parts:

  • Day 1: Python scripting in Avizo
  • Day 2: Development of Avizo Python modules

On the final afternoon, participants are encouraged to practise on their own datasets with guidance from the trainers.

Course fees

Each 2-day, in-person course costs:

  • £400 + VAT for academics, students, postdocs, and government attendees
  • £800 + VAT for industry attendees

HERCULES European School 35 Years

35th anniversary of the HERCULES School with a

2-day scientific workshop on 27-28 March 2026

This landmark event, jointly organised by the ILL, the ESRF and HERCULES School will take place in Grenoble, at the EPN Campus and Grenoble INP – UGA. It will bring together LSF representatives, LSF networks, the user community and former HERCULES participants. The workshop will feature presentations by past HERCULES participants and LSF network representatives, as well as round-table discussions.

This will be a unique opportunity to review the rapid development of large-scale facilities over the last fifteen years, consider the future development of the field, and reflect on the long-term need to train the next generation of expert users in Europe and internationally.

On Saturday afternoon 28th March, from 4.30 to 6pm, time will be dedicated to two presentations showcasing the importance of Large-Scale synchrotron & neutron Facilities for General Public applications.

The 11th International Conference on Hard X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES 2026) provides a week-long, international forum for the presentation and discussion of recent advances in hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and its application.

The meeting will bring together colleagues from academia, national laboratories, and industry to discuss the latest developments in instrumentation, methodology, theory, and emerging applications, centred around multiple topical areas.

The program will include plenary, invited and contributed talks, poster sessions, vendor exhibition, and ample networking opportunities, providing a unique platform to foster dialogue across disciplines and promote collaborations that will further advance both the methodology and the scientific impact of hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

For the first time, HAXPES 2026 will feature an early career morning, designed to support junior colleagues in developing their research profiles, building professional networks, and engaging with leaders in the field.

The Call for Proposals for the 2026-II cycle will cover experiments scheduled from end of June to December 2026, except for the MX Beamlines, which will cover the entire year.

For those users applying to MSPD, CLAESS and NOTOS: if your proposal goes to the waiting list, it can be moved to another beamline in case enough beamtime is available. Please, indicate your preferred beamline and the second option in the text of the proposal.

Coherence 2026

The International Workshop on Phase Retrieval and Coherent Scattering is the leading international meeting focused on sharing the latest advances in developing and using coherent scattering methods with X-rays, extreme-ultraviolet light, and electrons recently enabled by advances in source technology. This biannual conference series, started in 2008, attracts researchers from many fields (including physics, chemistry, biology, optics, earth, environmental, planetary sciences, and materials research) who are interested in developing coherence-based methods and their applications.

The University of Wisconsin and Argonne National Laboratory will host the 2026 Coherence Workshop along the peaceful shores of Lake Mendota in downtown Madison, Wisconsin from June 21-25, 2026.

With the Upgrade of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) now fully completed, the United States Midwest region will start a new chapter in its long history of science with coherent x-rays and electron sources. We invite the worldwide community to join us in Madison and at the APS for this meeting.
