European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques. User operation will start in September 2017.

For our Control and Analysis Software group, we are looking for a

Programmer - Scientific Instrument Support Engineer (f/m) 

The position

  • provide support to the responsibles and users of scientific instruments
  • be responsible for control software development and scientific programming
  • collect requirements, design software architecture, specify interfaces, develop and test the software in teams, deploy the code and collect feedback
  • be part of a software development group


  • relevant academic education
  • proven experience in C/C++/Python is a must,
  • experience in Java is an advantage
  • expertise in agile software developments (SCRUM, Lean, Kanban) is an advantage
  • expertise in the area of control (SCADA) software frameworks, or in signal and image processing, data analysis, scientific computing, or programming in low level hardware control is a plus
  • experience with relational databases is an asset
  • excellent communication skills and being a team player is a must

This appointment is initially limited to two years and may – subject to a later decision – become permanent.

Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany. In addition European XFEL provides a non-contributory company pension scheme as well as broad relocation benefits. The European XFEL GmbH intends to achieve a widely international staff. Non-German candidates hired from abroad receive an international allowance.
