The Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking an experienced scientist to support commissioning and operations of the new state-of-the-art X-ray Pair Distribution Function Beamline, PDF at the NSLS-II closely working with the Lead Beamline Scientist. The selected candidate is also expected to assist the development of experimental and software tools that enable simultaneous PDF and Infra-Red (IR) spectroscopic measurements.

 

NSLS-II is a new 3rd generation synchrotron facility  located on Long Island, New York with extremely high brightness and exceptional beam stability. The PDF beamline at the NSLS-II will facilitate PDF, complementary medium resolution wide angle, and small angle scattering experiments. The PDF user/science program will mainly focus on studies of the local structure-property relationships in complex materials.

 

Key responsibilities:

·       Support commissioning and operations of the PDF beamline.

·       Provide general user support for the PDF beamline.

·       Engage in beamline control and data acquisition software development, implementation and testing.

·       Develop and commission a state-of-the-art IR setup for simultaneous PDF and IR measurements.

·       Build a strong catalysis science program at NSLS-II beamlines.

·       Reach out and engage with beamline users to promote a strong science program.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·       Ph.D. in chemistry or physics or related field.

·       At least 2 years of postdoctoral experience in a relevant field.

·       Expertise in synchrotron based materials structure characterization and/or imaging techniques.

·       Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·       Expertise in synchrotron powder diffraction and/or PDF techniques.

·       Demonstrated track record of application of IR spectroscopy in catalysts research and/or at least 2 years of hands on experience with IR setups.

·       Demonstrated track record of in-situ synchrotron measurements under different sample environments.

·       At least 2 years of hands on experience with experimental protocols using highly toxic and flammable gases.

·       Experience in supporting users at a synchrotron or a neutron facility.

·       Demonstrated proficiency in Python programming.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills he or she brings to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
