As part of its mission as a user facility, the ESRF provides service and support to its scientific community. Experiments performed on the ESRF experimental stations (beamlines) require increasingly sophisticated sample environments.

The sample environment laboratory is in charge of designing, mounting, testing, maintaining and improving state-of-the-art sample environment instrumentation. This involves close collaboration with beamline staff and other internal support groups (High Pressure Lab, Software Group, Detector and Electronics Group, etc).

Your missions are the following:

  • Operation of the loan pool (in-situ cells, cryostats...)
  • Maintenance (testing, repairs, documentation) of the equipment belonging to the pool
  • Preparation and modification of the equipment and installation at the beamline
  • Design of new equipment


  • You should hold a technician degree (BSc, Licence, HND, HNC, BTS, DUT, Bachelor, Meister, Vordiplom, Perito, Laurea Triennale, Diplomatura, Ingenieria Técnica or equivalent) in a field relevant to scientific instrumentation
  • 2 to 8 years of professional experience including experience with cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum, thermometry, or resistive and conductive heating
  • Experience with high fields (magnetic, electric) or in-situ cells for catalysis and electrochemistry is an asset.
  • Knowledge of precision mechanics and CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks) is desirable.
  • Ability to interact easily in a multicultural environment
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF

The annual gross salary will be within the range 26 – 32 k€ and additional allowances may apply.
