Your principal mission will be to assist in the manufacturing activities of the Crystal Analyser Laboratory. Specific duties will require you to:

  • Operate and maintain the Crystal Analyser Laboratory equipment,
  • Manufacture spherical/cylindrical analyser crystals by anodic bonding and epoxy gluing,
  • Prepare polished optical surfaces by using a polishing or grinding machine
  • Perform dicing of very thin Si/Ge wafers,
  • Measure the surface topography of optical components,
  • Manage stocks of raw materials and consumables,
  • Handle high value, fragile optical components,
  • Propose improvements of existing techniques & participate in the development of new methods,
  • Assist in other X-ray Optics Group activities when required.

Your duties will require you to work routinely in a clean-room environment whilst adhering to corresponding work practices. The post includes manipulation of fragile optical components.


  • You should hold a technician degree (BSc, Licence, HND, HNC, BTS, DUT, Bachelor, Meister, Vordiplom, Perito, Laurea Triennale, Diplomatura, Ingenieria Técnica or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, materials sciences, measurement sciences or a related subject.
  • 3 to 8 years of professional experience
  • You should be an effective team worker, practiced in trouble-shooting and capable of managing your time to conduct several tasks in parallel.
  • Manual skills and meticulous attention to detail are essential in this work environment.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required (working language at the ESRF)
  • Practical knowledge of the machining (grinding, dicing, anodic bonding) and optical polishing of brittle materials such as silicon, as well as the use of vacuum systems would be an advantage.


The annual gross salary will be within the range 25 – 32 k€ and additional allowances may apply.
