You will play a major role in the operation and further development of the ID17 medical beamline as well as in the other activities of the Complex Systems and Biomedical Sciences group.

ID17 is the leading beamline in Europe for medical applications of synchrotron radiation. The current beamline activities focus on functional and anatomical imaging, radiation biology and clinically-oriented radiotherapy. New programmes on the use of Micro-beam Radio-Therapy (MRT) in radiotherapy and radiosurgery are currently being developed with the mid-term objective of a full clinical trial programme.

As a Beamline Scientist, your missions include:

  • Providing scientific leadership in the field of medical applications of synchrotron radiation and ensuring coordination of the current and new research programmes in collaboration with external partners such as hospitals and expert groups  
  • Demonstrating a proactive commitment to establishing partnerships and initiatives for grant applications
  • Providing scientific and technical support to users
  • Managing the beamline team and ensuring a smooth interaction with external collaborators


  • MD or PhD and several years of postdoctoral experience in medicine, medical physics, biology, or a related discipline
  • Relevant synchrotron research experience in medical applications including medical imaging and/or radiotherapy is an asset
  • Managerial skills are essential. Good communication abilities are necessary to integrate into a multidisciplinary and international research team. Project management skills will be an asset.
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

*Appointments are for a fixed period of up to 5 years. However, applicants with outstanding credentials may be considered for a permanent appointment.
