The first MOOC to provide an extensive introduction to synchrotron and XFEL facilities and associated techniques. This first of two courses is pitched at a level to provide valuable insights into this broad spectrum of scientific disciplines, from the generation of x-rays, via the interaction of x-rays with matter, to a description of the machines that produce intense x-ray sources. The sister course will concentrate on modern experiments performed using these facilities.

EPFLx: Synchrotrons and X-Ray Free Electron Lasers (part 2)

This second of two sister courses is pitched at a level to provide valuable insights to a scientifically diverse audience into the broad spectrum of methods that use synchrotrons, including diffraction and elastic scattering; absorption, fluorescence, and photoelectron spectroscopies; and various imaging techniques, including tomography, coherent lensless imaging, and ptychography.

This course will launch on February 1 2024 and will be available indefinitely.

Young Researchers’ Symposium with ESS visit – Life Science

During this 2-day event, specifically aimed at early career researchers, we will dive into science along with an ESS tour (23/4) and listen to (and mingle with) speakers from diverse sectors about career opportunities after PhD/Postdoc (24/4). The aim of the symposium, which is the second one in a series, is to create a platform for early career researchers within life sciences working on X-rays and neutrons to meet, get inspired, establish new networks, and discuss ideas for their research.

UXSS-2024 is being organized jointly by the Stanford PULSE Institute, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Menlo Park, CA, USA, Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) DESY, Hamburg, Germany, and Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland. The program is highly interdisciplinary, with topics ranging from fundamentals of X-ray free-electron lasers  to molecular biology, and from atomic and molecular physics to condensed matter physics and chemical physics. In addition to lectures, there will also be  visits to various experimental end-stations of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The LCLS team is excited to introduce the newly launched LCLS-II to the summer school attendees. 

7th Annual Workshop on Advances in X-Ray Imaging

We are really excited to announce that we are running our X-Ray Imaging workshop again, for the 7th time, on the 19th June 2024. This event is a collaboration between The University of Manchester at Harwell, 3Dmagination and the Collaborative Computational Project in Tomographic Imaging (CCPi) with the aim of bringing together scientists from different fields to discuss developments and applications of a variety of X-Ray imaging and complementary techniques, and to build international collaborations. The topic of this year’s conference will focus on correlative imaging techniques (coupling X-rays, neutrons, diffraction), 4D in situ imaging (X-ray tomography), Big Data/Machine learning and quantification of data (advanced image processing, in situ strain mapping, modelling).

We are pleased to invite you to ICXS 2024 where we will gather renowned speakers and guests to provide a platform for exchange about compact synchrotron X-ray sources, both classical accelerator-based as well as laser-wakefield accelerator-based inverse Compton sources. Furthermore, we intend to complement this R&D-aspect with X-ray applications in biomedical and material research. This way, we hope that potential users learn about the capabilities of these X-ray sources on the one hand, while developers understand the needs and requirements of users and thus may focus their research accordingly.

Two full days will be filled with presentations, poster session and time to interact with experts in the field. On the third day, we will offer tours of the Munich Compact Light Source (MuCLS) and the Centre of Advanced Laser Applications (CALA).

Submissions can either be made through a new Rapid Access proposal, or by Requesting Shifts against an existing CLS@APS Project in the CLS User Portal. The CLS@APS programme represents a partnership between the Canadian Light Source (CLS) and the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, USA. Through this arrangement, Canadians have access to techniques and beamlines at APS (some of which they helped develop), continue to aid in sector 20 development and operation, and promote the growth of the scientific community.

Each summer HZB offers 20 undergraduate students an eight-week summer student programme. International students can get the chance to work on their own research project in close cooperation with HZB scientists in the fields of Photon Science, Photovoltaics, Solar Cells / Catalysis, Electrochemical Energy Storage, Quantum and Functional Materials and Accelerator research. PAL-XFEL Call for proposals

We invite scientists worldwide to submit proposals for general user beamtime experiments at PAL-XFEL (Pohang Accelerator Laboratory – X-ray Free Electron Laser) from August to December 2024.

PAL-XFEL has three beamlines, two for hard X-ray experiments (XSS: X-ray Scattering and Spectroscopy, NCI: Nano Crystallography and Coherent Imaging) and one for soft X-ray experiments (SSS: Soft X-ray Scattering and Spectroscopy). The access to PAL-XFEL is open to the international scientific community, with the requirement that foreign users collaborate with Korean scientists being local contacts. Additionally, all applicants must contact PAL-XFEL staff scientists to discuss experimental details before submitting a beamtime proposal. There is no fee for proposal submission, but charges will apply when the experiment is conducted, as per government policy. Please register as a user of PAL and submit an application form of the PAL-XFEL proposal via the website

15th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI) 2024

The international Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI) is a successful conference series continuing for nearly 40 years, organised by the community of worldwide synchrotron radiation (SR) and X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) facilities. This 15th SRI conference will again be hosted by Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) and the European XFEL. The SRI conferences are important for the worldwide community to share key experiences in scientific and technical developments. Having timely access to the latest information and new ideas is of crucial importance for the future development of all light sources, the development of the field as a whole as well as for the economic and political development of participating countries. International Summit on Organic and Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cell Stability 15

Register for free at the São Paulo School of Advanced Science in 4th Generation Synchrotron Techniques (SPSAS-SyncLight), which will be held from October 14 to 25 in Campinas-Brazil. Promoted by the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) and funded by São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), SyncLight 2024 aims to bring togheter young researchers from Brazil and around the world to discuss the recent opportunities offered by advanced experimental synchrotron techniques available at Sirius, the Brazilian 4th generation light source.
Over two weeks participants will have lectures covering a wide range of topics from in synchrotron accelerators basics to diverse experimental techniques driving research and advances in fields of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Health, Energy, New Materials, Environmental Sciences, and more.  This is an excellent opportunity for the international community of young researchers to come to Brazil and discuss the 4th generation synchrotron techniques offered by Sirius. Travel expenses will be covered by FAPESP, a Brazilian funding agency supporting the course.
